Independent Cinemas get a Lottery makeover

More than 50 independent cinemas across the UK have benefited from a £475,000 injection of Lottery cash from the UK Film Council to help upgrade facilities and enhance the cinema-going experience for audiences.

The funds will be used to improve a range of facilities, with money being spent on building refurbishment, lighting and seating, as well as new projection, sound and digital equipment. A significant number of the awards will go towards improving access for people with sensory impairments, via the purchase of cinema access equipment such as audio description and subtitling kits


Fox reaches digital cinema upgrade deal

News Corp’s Twentieth Century Fox has reach a deal with a group of theater chains paving the way for a long-delayed $1.1 billion digital cinema upgrade that Hollywood hopes will boost attendance and cut costs, sources familiar with the deal said on Thursday.

Barco Financial Results – Weak second quarter – Good order intake – Euro 30 million cost reduction plan to improve results

The world’s second-largest maker of digital cinema projectors plans to fire an undisclosed number of workers and signaled it may sell some unprofitable operations to reduce annual expenses by 30 million euros. Chief Executive Officer Martin De Prycker stuck to an earlier forecast that full-year sales will increase after first-half revenue unexpectedly dropped.

De Prycker declined to give an estimate for the total number of workers being fired, saying only that the company reduced its workforce of 3,744 by 3 percent this month.
